Sgt. Richard Lewis said the explosive discovery was made at an apartment on 12th Street just off Wilshire Blvd.

Police say they found a 17-year-old man inside reportedly under the influence of narcotics. A search of the residence was conducted and investigators uncovered a lot of contraband, including a 3-inch PVC pipe bomb.

"Along with that, they found some firecrackers and M-80s," said Lewis.

Tenants in the apartment building were evacuated for three hours as the L.A. County Sheriff's Bomb Squad destroyed three improvised bombs.

The 17-year-old arrested was booked on counts of possession and manufacture of explosive devices charges that carry a state prison sentence if he is convicted.
