High School Girl Has Perfect Attendance And Wins Awesome Prize!

ALTA LOMA (CBS) — 15 year old Melissa Hedrick wins a free car for perfect attendance at Alta Loma High School this year.

And as Greg Mills reported for KCAL9 News Thursday, there is just one slight problem: she's not old enough to drive it.

Hedrick has to wait four more months to get her learner's permit! She won a new Chevy Cruze. It beats the car she was going to get...a 1985 El Camino from her parents with 195K miles on it.

She's one of hundreds of students in the Chaffey Union High School District who had perfect attendance this year.

Each year Mark Christopher Auto Center rewards one deserving student with a free car.

This amazing incentive has paid off. The Superintendent says those with perfect attendance tripled this year at the two schools involved in the free car give-away. Each year two different schools are in the rewards program.

This year: Alta Loma and Ontario high schools. Next year: Montclair and Rancho Cucamonga.

More than 300 students at the two (Ontario & Alta Loma H.S.) schools involved this year had perfect attendance. Five students are then selected through a drawing...only one has keys that will start the car.

Hedrick said keeping perfect attendance was no biggie. Straight A's and she's on the softball team to boot!
