Not Thriving? 24-Hour Strike Kicks Off At Kaiser Hospitals

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Nurses and health care professionals are striking at busy Kaiser Permanente hospitals across Southern CaliforniaWednesday.

The protest, which kicked off a 6 a.m. Wednesday, is expected to continue until 6 a.m. Thursday morning.

Protestors say they are concerned about patient care and that adequate time and staffing is not being provided.

“The Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center will remain open and we will provide care for our patients,” the hospital said in a statement. “We have brought in management nurses and others as necessary to ensure continued patient safety.”

Kaiser is the worse hospital i ever belonged, takes weeks to see a doctor, like going through air port sec. before you see a doctor.

  2. Rick says:

You gotta love their commercials. Especially the one containing little spanish lessons. Guess they have the $$$$$ to shove those commercials down our throats yet not enough capital to run the facility efficiently.

  3. Manuel Luis Gaytán says:

Kaiser is an awesome hospital. I didn’t notice the lack of staffing. When my wife makes an appointment, She is able to see the doctor same day or next day the latest.

  4. Mary Cook says:

In Fontana we have the best of care. Both my husband and myself are very happy.

I cannot comment on outpatient Kaiser situation – when members come to see their doctors for appointments. I can say about situation in the Kaiser Sunset Hospital – staffing: at times nurses can not take a break due to the absence of replacent, or when they do take a break their “cover nurses” who have their patient load has to take double patient load, jepardizing patient’s safety. At the same time, kaiser as non for profit organization made over 2 billion USD profit last year, top CEOs got millions in bonuses, and not enough staffing? Kaiser is “thriving” (current Kaiser compain, watch the news) on it’s staffing bones.
This is a long story, check the net, you will see.

My husband has stayed at the Fontana facilty for surgeries twice in 2003 and 2008- they are unfreindly, understaffed and everything you ask for is someone elses job- I have had to stay with him almost 24/7 while he’s there. His stays in the Riverside Hospital are alway better- they are understaffed also- requested for things take awhile but the staff in general is friendlier and more attentive. For the most part however we have been satified with the service provided by Kaiser permanente.

Nationally, in every industry, CEO pay needs to be reined in, since they won’t police themselves. They take unconscionable amounts of compensation, while nurses and other healthcare staff barely get a restroom break, are on their feet, overworked on sometimes 10 to 12-hour shifts. This leads to psychological strain on them, their families and healthcare in general. I think doctors are also overworked by this blood-sucking system. Radiologists face unbelievable quotas and the threat that their job will be outsourced to India.

Young nursing students who are promised jobs when they finish school actually can’t get a job because they have no experience.

The whole system stinks, nationwide. I blame Ronald Reagan, “managed care” and the fascistic economic system taking over the US. Chinese communism is winning, by attrition, with their model of amoral capitalism. Our “news” has been dumbed down. People are afraid to speak out because they’ll lose their pathetic little job that doesn’t pay enough to make ends meet. Kudos to the nurses at Kaiser brave enough to speak up and take action.

NOTICE ALL THE PROTESTERS ARE FAT,OUT OF SHAPE, AND SMOKERS. WHAT GOOD DOES IT DO TO THEM WITH PAY RAISE INCREASE, MORE DONUTS?

  9. DARKGABLE says:

SEIU SUCKS AS A UNION, THEY ARE THE LABOR MOVEMENT COWARDS, WORKING SIDE BY SIDE WITH THE EMPLOYERS MAKING BACK DOOR DEALS IN ORDER TO CONTINUE COLLECTING MEMBERS DUES, WHILE THEY’RE COMPROMISING WORKERS VOICES, CUT BACK IN WAGES AND BENEFITS, SEIU
CONTINUES NOT TO REPRESENT THEIR MEMBERS, LIKE THE OLD AND FORMER SEIU-UHW WEST, WHO IS NOW NUHW THE ONES WHO CREATED THE BEST CONTRACTS FOR WORKERS IN CALIFORNIA WHO PROMOTES GOOD PATIENT CARE FOR OUR PATIENTS. THANK GOD FOR NUHW AND GET RID OF THE PREDATOR SEIU FOR GOOD.

  10. Garry says:

NUHW dud not make any good contracts yet, leadership has their roots in SEIU, because NUHW was SEIU-UHW. After internal war, NUHW was born. So far NUHW made one lousy contract, lost some health organization back to SEIU!!!! NUHW sounds good, but if you look closer – you see SEIU type of leadership.

    1. DARKGABLE says:

Speaking on Seiu leadership, let’s see they don’t represent their members, they lowered their members wages and benefits, they had to hire negotiator(s) from other states to negotiate California contracts and all they did was take-aways, making backdoor deal against their members as I stated before and kissing all the employer(s) butts while they raise their members dues. And they ‘ve the nerve to say they represent their members, seiu are wanna be company union making pillow talk with the employers, the seiu leadership like Andy Stern, Mary k. Henry and that fool Dave Regan, who said two years ago that ” he would drive a stake through NUHW HEART, ask DAVE Regan now what year is this and NUHW IS STILL statnding, seiu is the LACKY OF THE WHOLE ENTIRE LABOR MOVEMENT. seiu has FOOLS for leadership.

As parents of a growing pediatric type 1 diabetic patient whom we must inject at least 4 times a day, we have had a terrible time with Kaiser Fontana’s pediatric endocrinology.
They went from being confrontational to flat out misleading in their reports on factual matters of family demograghs and history. All the mistakes were at our disadvantage and characterized our family history and medical history in an unfavorable and provably, highly inaccurate way. On our last visit they were very confrontational, but because we pay a huge sum to insure a large family and we need help controlling a growing diabetic, we managed to get past their obvious control issues and get to a plan for reducing blood sugars. One week later we hear from CPS over our disagreement. After 2 interviews with records, exam etc, CPS flat out states that there is not a neglect issue. After that I pulled my sons records from Kaiser and found this bizarre power-trip with lots of disadvantageous reporting errors that somehow always were written in such a way as to impact negatively against us, the patient and family.
I do not understand why anyone who needs medical care would pay for that.

We have since left Kaiser for treatment with another Dr who is also a diabetic and also one of the people disparaged in Kaiser’s report under their completely erroneous family history. That’s the funnies part!
We use a different formula for calculating insulin dosages and my sons blood sugars are in much better shape. Near perfect in fact.

Helluva a bedside manner Kaiser. We pay you for years, bring our sick son to you and you subject our family to utter madness.

    Buyer bewares.
Something is very very wrong with Kaiser.
