Start Your Engines! La Sierra Grand Prix Kicks Off

RIVERSIDE (CBS) — Riverside City Council members, firefighters, police and local business owners will vie to finish first Sunday in go-kart races during the first-ever La Sierra Grand Prix.

The charity event benefiting the Alvord Unified School District will begin about 11 a.m. with practice runs at a makeshift race course set up in the parking lot behind a strip mall on Riverwalk Parkway.

"The Grand Prix is a fun, edgy social activity for the entire family -- kids, teens, their parents -- and fits with the city's `Seizing Our Destiny' vision to provide a mix of venues for entertainment and socializing," City Councilman Steve Adams said.

Three rounds of go-kart racing are planned, as well as a tire-changing competition, according to organizers.

Free music and dance performances by Night Tides, West Coast Rock School and Ballet Folklorico are also planned during the event, which is expected to wrap up around 6 p.m.
