Gag Order Imposed In UC Speech Disruption Case
SANTA ANA (AP) — A judge has issued a gag order in the case of 11 Muslim students charged with disrupting a speech given by an Israeli ambassador last year on the University of California, Irvine campus.
The Orange County Register says a judge granted a defense motion on Friday seeking to stop prosecutors from making any more public statements about the case.
Lawyers for 11 current and former UC students sought in February to remove county prosecutors from the case, arguing that they referred to the case internally as the "UCI Muslim Case," a term they say is evidence of religious bias.
The district attorney's office denies having any religious or ethnic bias.
The students have pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor conspiracy to commit a crime and misdemeanor disruption of a meeting.
