Tommy’s Original Celebrates 65 Years In Business This Weekend

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — This Sunday only, to celebrate 65 years in business, burger giant Original Tommy’s will give a one-day combo deal (cheeseburger and Coca-Cola for $.65) at the Beverly and Rampart location.

Robert Casteneda, Tommy’s director of operations, brought Tommy’s Food Truck (aka Shack on Wheels) by KCAL 9 News at 2 p.m. Friday to get the party started.

Kaj Goldberg (he gets all the fun assignments!) hung out on the truck, heard about Tommy’s history (from its original location, there are now 33 restaurants around the Southland) and all about the party! (That’s all good, Kaj…but did you get us some chili? With the cheddar?)

The party will be held at the original location on May 15, between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. You can buy t-shirts and there will also be live music.

(PS: Kaj, don’t forget the chili cheese fries.)

  • Don Ward

I am one of the original Tommy’s customers from the late 40’s. Tommy’s was a favorite hang out at 1-2 in the morning.
The line would be half way down the block for all the late night crowd.
Mission orange drink was one of the Tommy trade marks, but long gone.
Lets go for another 6 + decades, though I dont think ill make it. LOL
Tommy’s is one of the few LA land marks still around, along with Angels Flight. Oh yeah Bobs Big boy in Burbank.
LA just isnt the same, but the memories are still here.

    • Cougo

Thanks for the post Don. My memories only go back to the early ’70s when our office would send someone down to Tommy’s around midnight when we had to work all night to finish the weeks projects. Most of the people placing their orders started with “Double cheeseburger and………”.

  • Mike

If you eat at Tommy’s, make sure you have plenty of toilet paper for the next day. Payback’s a mother.

  • Hamburgler

You don’t just need toilet paper you’ll also need some Pepto! This stuff gives you diarrhea…LMAO! Food for drunks afterdark.

  • Bob's BIg Boy

A bit of Tommy’s trivia……..did you know the original Tommy’s did not serve fries with their burgers? They used to serve potato chips.

    • Eduardo Ramirez

Boy I used to hate that, their fries are delicious

  • Nick

THe chili that smothers the burger is fantastic. And they’re best eaten standing up over the little shelf, at midnight, outside at the original location–Beverly/Rampart.

    • Ron

You’re right, Nick. I did it many times, before heading back with friends, to the O.C., after an outdoor concert at the original open air Universal Amphitheatre.

      Great memories !!

  • Mr. Food

I heard that Tommy’s chili is from Smart & Final with carrot strips added to it.
Don’t know if it’s true or not.
If you can taste it the next morning you know it’s good !!!!!
    Love Tommy’s food.

  • Mary

    Happy Birthday to you
    Happy Birthday to you
    Happy Birthday dear Tommy
    Happy Birthday to you!

    Happy Birthday Tommy…
    We love your food.

  • Crazy Irish

All tommies should do this. Tommies chili cheese fries are awesome

I have a stomach like concrete and a colon that is rarely sensitive but this place gives you DIARRHEA… Bottom Line= I quit eating the stuff. Now I don’t have to carry that roll of toilet paper in the trunk of my car. Public restroom toilet paper is like wiping your butt with a corn cob.

I’ve been eating Tommy’s since September 1946, never had a bad one, never had any ill affects from any of the who knows how many I’ve eaten. Took a beautiful young lady there on our first date, she thought I was nuts until she bit into the sloppy, delightful Tommy’s burger. Now after over 52 years of marriage we still enjoy a sloppy Tommy’s from time to time. Never thought about it but maybe Tommy’s is the glue that has held us together all these years.

I don’t recall any french-fries at Tommy’s back in ’46 but who could have downed fries on top of that big burger cooked and served by Tommy himself? Oh, those USC football players could have. Fishing in the coke cooler to find my flavor of soda was even a treat!

And last but not least, remember the Punch and Judy over on Alvarado and Miramar? Moron’s Ecstasy, a quart of ice cream and a pint of topping. Eat two at one setting and they gave you a third one free to eat while there. I ate two once but declined the third one! I didn’t feel all that well.

  • Joe

Well thats just great. What about Tommy’s fans that don’t live by there or can’t get there? Thanks alot Tommy’s
