Police Say Man They Fatally Shot In Pico-Union Also Slashed His Throat

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A Pico-Union man who fatally stabbed his mother and wounded his grandmother also slashed his own throat moments before police shot him four times and killed him, a police spokesman said Tuesday.

What caused Hector Hernandez, 36, to run amok was unclear a day after the attack in the 1500 block of Arapahoe Street.

Police with the Media Relations Section said he slashed his own neck before rushing toward four officers -- all of whom shot him once.

Blanca Hernandez died in the roughly 1:30 p.m. attack, and the man's grandmother, 85-year-old Maria Gonzalez, suffered a cut hand, police said.

It was Gonzalez who told police Hernandez slashed his own throat.

Police dispatched to the address heard a scream coming from a back yard, where they found Hernandez bleeding.
