2 Shot And Killed In Upscale Riverside Neighborhood, Suspect Is Killed By Police

RIVERSIDE (CBS) — Investigators Tuesday night are trying to piece together the mystery surrounding a double homicide in an upscale neighborhood in Riverside.

The suspect in the murders was, in turn,  shot and killed by police. The unidentified suspect was taken to an area hospital where he later died.

The murders took place in the 11500 block of Trailway Drive in the Riverwalk section of west Riverside, said Riverside police Lieutenant Guy Toussaint.

Police could not say what caused the shooting only that they responded to a call of "shots fired" just after 6 p.m.

The crime, according to neighbors, caught them quite off guard.

Melissa McCarty, reporting for KCAL9, spoke to many who echoed the sentiment that crimes like murder don't happen in this area. For one thing, the area where the shooting took place is gated.

Toussaint told reports, "these are very nice homes. This is a very nice neighborhood."

The investigation is on-going.

Officials could not say what relationship the gunman had to the victims. They were only described as a man and a woman, pending notification of their next of kin. Both victims were reportedly shot in the front yard of a home.

One woman reportedly called police saying she was locked inside a bathroom inside her home with a 4-year-old. It is unclear what connection she had with the victim or the suspect, if any.

No officers were hurt in the incident.
