Alvarez, 42, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to charges of sexually molesting a female juvenile relative.

San Bernardino County Deputy District Attorney Karen Schmauss said Alvarez is charged with three felony counts, including committing a lewd act upon a child and unlawful sexual intercourse.

Schmauss said the crimes began in 2009 when the alleged victim was 15 years old and continued into this year.

Alvarez joined the Long Beach Police Department in 1994.

Bail is set at $250,000, and if convicted on all three counts, Alvarez may face over four years in prison.
