CIF Approves Regional Football

(Rahshaun Haylock/CBS) -- There is once again another modification to high school football.  Regional championships have been approved for football beginning in 2012.

The proposal of the CIF Football Advisory Committee that was passed will require the season to start a week earlier, in August.

In 2012, section games will have to end by December 1st.  Regional games will be played December 7th -8th, with the State Bowl Games being held December 14th -15th.

The CIF Southern Section was one of three sections to oppose the proposal.  Southern Section teams will likely have to play 16 games if they are able to make it to a State Bowl Game.

The regional games will be in the same format as the State Bowl Games.  There will be an Open, Division I, II, II, and Small Schools games in the regionals.  There will be Northern Regionals and Southern Regionals played at a site determined by the State CIF, likely closest to the higher seeds. Participants in the regionals will be selected by section commissioners.  The winners will advance to the State Bowl Games at Home Depot Center.

The revenue from the regionals will be split up between the ten sections in CIF.  The Southern Section will receive the highest share, 22.4%, and the Los Angeles City Section 8.02% of the profits.
