Feds Say San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant Is Safe

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO (AP) — Federal regulators say the San Onofre nuclear power plant is operating safely but there's still room for improvement.

The North County Times says concerns were raised Thursday during an annual performance review meeting in San Juan Capistrano.

NRC officials told plant owner Southern California Edison that the commission performed 13,700 hours of inspections at the plant last year -- compared to 5,000 hours for similar plants.

They said the plant is safe but there are still concerns about how workers and managers perform their duties and whether employees feel comfortable reporting safety issues.

Edison executives said they've taken measures to make sure that workers are following procedures.
