Democrats Delay DMV Notices, Push To Extend Higher Vehicle Fees

SACRAMENTO (AP) — Democratic state lawmakers are trying to delay California vehicle registration notices while they try to coax Republicans to extend higher vehicle fees.

Democrats are pushing a bill that would direct the Department of Motor Vehicles to delay renewal notices by at least one month starting with drivers whose registrations are due July 1.

Drivers are poised to receive a half percent reduction in their vehicle registration fees after the current tax hike expires. The difference on a $15,000 car is $75.

Drivers could get frustrated if they pay the lower rate, only to be asked for more money later this year if lawmakers opt to renew the increase.

The Senate is expected to take up the proposal, SB94, next week after it passed the Assembly on a party-line vote Thursday.
