Judge Grants Injunction Against 2 Southland Gangs

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County prosecutors say a judge has granted a preliminary injunction that restricts the activities of two rival gangs in the San Gabriel Valley.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Chalfant granted the injunction Tuesday against members of Puente 13 and Bassett Grande.

It designates a 16-square-mile area into a "safety zone" and bars gang members from associating with one another in public or possessing weapons, narcotics or graffiti tools, among other things.

The area includes the cities of La Puente, Industry and a portion of West Covina and the communities of Avocado Heights, Bassett and Valinda.

A prosecutor says it is the largest geographic area for which the district attorney's office has obtained an injunction.

A violation can result in a six-month jail term.
