Woman Gets 3 Years For Embezzling $4M From 24 California Cities
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The former president of a Huntington Beach company has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for embezzling nearly $4 million from 24 California cities.
Belinda Exon, of Phoenix, was sentenced Monday in Los Angeles federal court. Her prison term will begin on June 3.
Prosecutors say Exon embezzled $3.9 million held by Rehab Financial Services, a company that kept grant money and other funds in escrow for city governments.
She pleaded guilty in May to taking more than $1 million from San Francisco, about $750,000 from Pomona and nearly $500,000 each from Seal Beach and Huntington Park. Prosecutors say Exon used the money to buy land in Arizona and fund two companies that she owned.
Other cities in the plea include Fullerton, Camarillo and Santa Cruz.
