Cal State Long Beach Cheer Team Forfeits National Title And Fires Coach

LONG BEACH (CBS) -- The Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) Cheer Team fired its coach after it was forced to forfeit a national title last week.

According to a statement from CSULB's Associated Students, Inc., the Cheer Team won the National Cheerleaders Association Small Coed Division I championship title over the weekend of April 9-10 at the NCA Collegiate Championships in Daytona.  When it was discovered that non-CSULB students were participating on the team, they were forced to forfeit that title and coach Eric Anderson's contract was terminated.

"After a conversation with the NCA, it was determined that since non-CSULB students performed in the competition, it would be unethical and against CSULB Campus Regulation, ASI standards and NCA rules to retain the title," the organization said in a statement.

Anderson was cheer coach at Century High School in Santa Ana before joining CSULB in 2001.  He also worked with cheer teams at the University of Michigan and University of Nevada and has won more than 30 national championships.
