Long Beach's Seventh Street Bridge Closes For 1 Year

LONG BEACH (CBS) — Drivers in Long Beach should prepare for a longer, messy commute starting Monday night.

As of 10 p.m. Monday, the Seventh Street Bridge will be shut down for an entire year.  The bridge connects the northbound 405 Freeway with California State Route 22.

A major reconstruction project will add a carpool lane to the northbound 405 Freeway and make direct connectors from the carpool lane to the westbound 22 Freeway and the northbound 605 Freeway.

Drivers coming into Long Beach from Orange County will have to use surface streets.  One suggested detour routes drivers from Seal Beach Boulevard to Studebaker Road via Westminster Avenue.

Approximately 30,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily. The construction is part of the overall West County Connectors Project, which will cost a total of $277 million.
