Santa Monica Beach Evacuated After Grenade Simulator Found

SANTA MONICA (AP) — Police have cordoned off part of the beach in Santa Monica to look for explosive devices after finding a grenade simulator in the sand.

Santa Monica police Sgt. Cody Green says beachgoers spotted a suspicious device Friday and flagged down a lifeguard, who notified police.

A Los Angeles County sheriff's bomb squad collected two explosive devices and cleared about a block of beach near Wilshire Boulevard.

Green says one of the devices appeared to be a hand grenade simulator used in military training. He did not have any information about the other device.

He says police are searching the sand for more possible devices. Green did not know how long the area would be closed.
