Students Protest Budget Cuts At All 23 CSU Campuses

LOS ANGELES (CBS)  It's unclear if voters or lawmakers will approve Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed budget cuts, but if so, they will take effect within the next two months.

Demonstrations against possible budget cuts are planned at all 23 California State University campuses Wednesday.

In fact, there was standing room only inside a classroom at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson early Wednesday morning.

The so-called "teach out" educational session was all about California's budget.

"This is teaching in a classroom, education about the issues. How we can go forward to get funding solutions and to protect higher education," says professor David Bradfield.

The Cal State system could lose at least $500 million in state funding if temporary tax increases proposed by Gov. Brown are approved.

Critics say they could lead to higher tuition, larger class sizes, and fewer student services.

Student Lauren Romero already has $20,000 worth of student loans and she's facing even more debt.

"It's going to be a lot of money but it is well worth it," she says. "I'm glad that I went to college."

Romero is the first in her family to go to college, but she's worried about cuts her siblings may face in coming years.

Other protests will be taking place at CSUN, Cal State Los Angeles and Cal Poly Pomona.
