'Pup Crawls' To Benefit Southland Animal Shelters

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Five hundred dogs will take part in New York's Brooklyn Bridge Pup Crawl Saturday. At the same time, 50 are signed up for the West Coast Pup Crawl in Upland.

Crawl co-founder Joseph Hassan says it started in 2009 as a way to help shelters deal with foreclosure pets because pet numbers were up and donations and adoptions were down.

Six rescues in New York, Florida and California were chosen to receive money.

In Los Angeles, the beneficiary is Ace of Hearts, which rescues animals from shelters the day they are scheduled to die, then finds homes for them.

The Humane Society of the United States and the Mayor's Alliance for New York City's Animals are New York co-sponsors and Helping Out Pets Everyday is the West Coast sponsor.
