Dodgers SS Rafael Furcal Pondering Retirement

(CBSsports.com/Matt Snyder) -- Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal sustained a broken thumb Monday night while sliding into third base in the fifth inning against the Giants. He is headed for the disabled list, though he reportedly mentioned he was "pondering retirement" after the game. (LA Times via Twitter)

Furcal is only 33, but he's battled severe injury woes in the past few years. He played just 36 games in 2008 and 97 last season. He had missed the previous two games with a wrist injury before returning Monday and falling injured again.

There's no telling just yet how seriously to take the retirement talk. It's easy to see how frustrated Furcal could be, so if he's speaking only out of frustration, the talk is rather meaningless. On the other hand, he could be exhausted from constantly having to rehab only to fall injured again. A broken thumb will likely keep him out four to six weeks. Maybe it was something he was already thinking about -- like if he got injured again that was it. Hard to tell at this point.

For now, the Dodgers have lost Furcal and will be moving forward with Jamey Carroll at short. They won the game Monday night to move to 6-4.
