Long Beach Officer Injured By Dry-Ice Bomb
LONG BEACH (CBS) — A Long Beach police officer investigating reports of fireworks in an alley near the Artesia (91) Freeway suffered minor injuries Sunday when a dry-ice bomb inside a plastic bag exploded next to him.
The officer, and others had responded to what neighbors believed were fireworks in the alley at Bort St. and Butler Ave. when the second device detonated, police Sgt. Rico Fernandez told the Long Beach Press-Telegram.
A third, similar device was found on the other side of the alley, Fernandez said, and it was detonated by the L.A. Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad, according to the Press-Telegram.
The devices are made with water, a bottle and dry ice or carbon dioxide and can take 30 minutes to an hour to build up enough pressure to rupture, according to California criminal codes cited by the newspaper. Making the devices is a felony, punishable by jail time and high fines.
