Dodgers Put Half-Price Beer On Hold In Light Of Recent Events

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Plans to ply Los Angeles Dodgers fans with half-price beer on selected nights may be on ice.

Dodger spokesman Josh Rawitch told the Los Angeles Times that the team is reconsidering a half-price-at-the-concession-stands night promotion.

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt maintained all last week that the team's beer sales policies were not a factor in the increasing lawlessness, that the team now admits, has permeated Dodger Stadium.

The nearly-fatal brutal beating of a San Francisco Giants fan 10 days ago has generated a firestorm of criticism from Dodger fans unhappy with security at Chavez Ravine.

"I don't think it's the sale of beer that's a problem, per se," McCourt said at a news conference Friday. "I think it's the abuse of that privilege."

Team spokesman Rawitch told The Times in comments posted online today that the team has reversed course, and is reviewing its prices and serving sizes for beer at the stadium.

The team is also reviewing at what point in a baseball game the taps should be turned off.

McCourt, beset by a divorce action and stadium cash-flow problems, has been financially pinched this year. His request for television rights payments ahead of schedule by the Fox networks was rejected by baseball Commissioner Bud Selig.

The team has also been asked to pay overtime expenses for the extra Los Angeles police presence that is being sent to the stadium in the wake of the beating.
