Bell Welcomes New City Council

BELL  (AP)  — The Los Angeles working-class suburb of Bell has sworn in a brand-new City Council.

In March, outraged residents stormed the polls to kick out the four City Council members accused of looting the city by doing out enormous salaries to themselves. The fifth council member who was not charged lost his bid for re-election.

During a nearly hour-long ceremony Thursday, the newly elected officials surrounded by their families took the stage one by one and repeated the oath of office.

Those sworn in included businessman Ali Saleh, health care administrator Nestor Valencia, social worker Violeta Alvarez, retired baker Danny Harber and attorney Ana Maria Quintana.

The new council will hold its first meeting next week.
