RIVERSIDE (AP) — Authorities say a pilot was killed when a small plane crashed and caught fire in the rugged hills in northern Riverside County.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the Piper Cherokee went down Sunday morning near Cherry Valley, southeast of Yucaipa.

The single-engine aircraft burst into flames after hitting the ground.

Gregor says investigators believe the pilot was the only person on board.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash.

The pilot’s name and the plane’s tail number have not been released.
