Suspected DUI Motorist Injures 3 In Costa Mesa

COSTA MESA (CBS)  — A driver believed to have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol drove through a parking lot and a bus bench in Costa Mesa Friday night, barreling across traffic into another lot and striking a parked truck, injuring three people inside the truck.

The incident was reported at 8:02 p.m. in a drugstore parking lot near 17th Street and Orange Avenue, said Lt. Rob Sharpnack of the Costa Mesa Police Department.

The driver, who was also injured, went over a curb, through a bus bench and across 17th Street into another parking lot, Sharpnack said.

"The driver broadsided a pickup truck there," Sharpnack said.

Three people from the pickup truck were taken to Hoag Hospital with back pain, and the driver of the pickup truck complained of pain in his lower extremities, Sharpnack said.

"The driver was taken to Western Medical Center with head, neck and chest injuries," Sharpnack said.

The man was expected to be arrested after treatment at the hospital.
