19 Passengers Rescued From Smoke-Filled Boat Off Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH (CBS) — Nineteen passengers on a distressed tour boat were rescued Friday after the vessel began smoking off Newport Beach.

A call for help from the tour boat — called Showboat — went out around 12:30 p.m. near the Lido Bridge, the Newport Beach Fire Department said.

Fire officials said that nearby boats were able to rescue passengers before aid arrived.

The passengers continued their tour on another boat.

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
    Aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
    The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

  • LJ Cotton

    The cabin started filling up
    with caustic, thick black smoke
If not for the 911 operators,
    they all would surely choke
    they all would surely choke.

  • The Professor

    The weather started getting rough,
    The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.

  • Ginger & Mary Ann

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
    With Gilligan
    The Skipper too,
    The millionaire and his wife,
    The movie star
    The professor and Mary Ann,
    Here on Gilligans Isle.

    It’s an uphill climb.

The crew, the first responders,OC Sheriff Dept and Fire Dept, I want to thank. They were Great. Never at any time did I feel worried for my families safety. We were close enough, that if we had to swim we could have.
Thank you OC Sheriff and Newport Fire Dept. for a job WELL DONE!!

  • Evelyn Mask

As a passenger onboard sitting within 6 feet of the engine when the fire in the engine started I will tell everyone that the actions of crew, other boats,OC Sheriff Dept and the Newport Fire Dept things could have been much worse. Thanks to all for the rapid response.

  • ME Mask

Without the rapid actions of everyone involved it could have been much worse. Sorry about the missing words in my comment above.
