Lakers Get Blessings From Cardinal, Archbishop

EL SEGUNDO (CBS) - Despite being 15 and 1 since the All-Star break, the Lakers are just one game ahead of the Mavericks in the loss column for 2nd place in the West. That makes Thursday night's showdown at Staples Center against Dallas crucial.

So there is, perhaps, no better time for the Lakers to receive blessings from one of the most important clergy around.

The Lakers invited the new Archbishop of Los Angeles, Jose Gomez, and Juan Luis Cipriani, the Cardinal of Lima, Peru to practice Wednesday.

Both men  had one-on-one conversations with Kobe Bryant, Phil Jackson, Mitch Kupchak and Pau Gasol.

Cardinal Cipriani shared stories of his playing days with the Peruvian national team from 1961 to 1967 with Kobe.

Kobe also mentioned this is the first time something, "like that" has ever happened.
