ANAHEIM (CBS) — Residents on Wednesday cheered a decision by lawmakers to dangle a multimillion-dollar carrot in front of the Sacramento Kings in an effort to lure the NBA team to Honda Center.

KNX 1070’s John Brooks reports the City Council members voted unanimously to issue up to $75 million in bonds for improvements at the arena.

In addition to the funds, the City Council also approved language that would require any NBA team playing here at Honda Center to use Anaheim — and only Anaheim — in its team name.

While both city officials and residents hope the move will boost the local economy, KNX 1070 sports anchor Randy Kerdoon says the more affluent fans in Orange County may be better suited to support an NBA team than Sacramento.

The Maloof brothers, who own the Kings have until April 18 to submit a relocation request to the NBA league office.

League owners could vote to support the move as early as May.

We don’t need another basketball team in the LA/OC area.

Why not? It will save a commute for many people and their famalies. Come on down queens.

I’d never drive all the way to Honda to see a game with a team that came from northern California except when they are playing either the Los Angeles Clippers or Los Angeles Lakers, two teams that I grew up with.

  4. Marissa says:

Let’s see now, we have the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Anaheim Ducks of Anahiem, Disneyland of Anahiem, Harbor Boulevard of Anaheim, Honda of Anaheim etc.

    1. Jeremy says:

Is there a POINT in your comment of Anaheim?

  5. Ralph Valle says:

AWESOME!!! I’m from northern CA and now have my hometown team five minutes from my house.

  6. Jeremy says:

It’s great to have an NBA team in the OC. For the haters, why even comment if you’re not a sportsfan? Most comments so far make little sense. Glad to put language in the deal that makes any Anaheim team keep Anaheim in their name!

  7. Suzi says:

Anaheim is run by a bunch of morons. I wonder if residents there realize that the city is cutting employees wages and enforcing mandatory layoffs while at the same time spending that kind of money for yet another sports team. Meanwhile we are in danger of losing our house as my husband takes another 5% pay cut. But I guess basketball teams matter more than whether or not someone is around to perform repairs to the city’s firetrucks, street sweepers and other apparently unnecessary city equipment.

    1. RamYOU! says:

I feel for what Suzi is saying….but remember with the new team means new jobs! If you really want to feel bad for anyone, think of those Sacramento Kings employees that will be losing their job and their income as the team moves.
