MONTEBELLO (CBS) — A gunman fatally shot by Montebello police at the end of a nearly hour-long pursuit has been identified.

George Jimenez, 31, of Montebello, died at the scene of the Monday afternoon shooting, according to the coroner's office.

Montebello police were called to the 1300 block of South Greenwood Avenue about 1 p.m. Monday by a woman who reported that her boyfriend pulled a gun on her and took their toddler daughter, sheriff's Lt. Dave Coleman said.

"They were told by the female informant that the suspect had arrived, had been drinking and showed a handgun and took their 3-year-old daughter," he said.

Police spotted and chased the car through Montebello and East Los Angeles, before Jimenez made a U-turn, stopped and got out of the car. He turned toward officers with a gun and allegedly fired a shot before officers fatally shot him.

"Preliminary information is that he did fire," Coleman said. "There is a handgun at the scene and it is loaded."

KCAL9's helicopter showed Jimenez inside his vehicle, talking on a cell phone, moments before he go out of the car.

"We know that he was in contact on the cell phone with family members who knew he was armed and he had made the statement that he wasn't going to go down easily," Coleman said.

The girl's mother ran up to the vehicle and took the child out after it stopped.

Jimenez has a brother who is a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, a sheriff's spokesman said.
