2 Azusa Teens Seriously Injured After Being Struck By Car

AZUSA (CBS) — Two teenagers are in serious condition Tuesday after being sruck by a car in Azusa this morning.

A boy and a girl, both 14, were struck on Baseline Road near Rockvale Avenue in a marked crosswalk about 7:35 a.m.

A helicopter took both to County-USC Medical Center, where they underwent surgery, Azusa police Cpl. Don Manley said.

A local woman driving an eastbound Nissan Maxima reportedly told police the sun was in her eyes, he said.

Police have yet to determine if she broke any traffic laws, Manley said.

The names of the injured students were withheld, but authorities said the boy goes to Azusa High and the girl to Foothill Middle School. Witnesses said the girl appeared to be most seriously hurt.

Maribel Munoz told reporters she saw the students just after the accident, and the "little boy was lying on the ground ... on his side. There was blood on his face. He was screaming."

Another woman said the same crosswalk was the scene of a fatal accident a couple of years ago. In September 2008, an 11-year-old boy on a bicycle was fatally struck there as he rode home from Foothill Middle School.

Manley said school administrators sent notes home with students, telling parents to emphasize safety in crossing streets.
