Nothing Rosy About This Gas Leak!

TORRANCE (CBS) — Residents digging a hole to place a rose bush hit a gas line Sunday in Torrance, prompting a gas leak that forced the evacuation of residents from three homes and the temporary closure of several blocks to traffic, officials reported.

The gas leak at a house at 2074 Santa Fe Ave. was reported at 11:57 a.m., said Torrance police Sgt. Jeremiah Hart.

Residents were digging holes to put in a rose bush when they hit the gas line that prompted the leak, said Anne Silva of Southern California Gas Company.

"Now is a good time to let residents know to call 8-1-1 before digging or planting anything," Silva said. "Now these residents are without service and their equipment must be repaired."

Hart said there were no injuries, no fires and no explosions because of the leaking gas, and the leak was fixed and streets reopened at about 1:45 p.m.

Residents were allowed back in the area around 2 p.m., Silva said.
