NEWPORT BEACH (CBS2) — For the past 28 years, the Newport-Mesa Spirit Run has been a popular race for families and community fundraiser.
The run, which takes place Sunday at Fashion Island, will offer races for both adults and kids.
At College Park Elementary School in Costa Mesa, teachers like Julie Smith have helped the students prepare for this race as well as a kids’ version of the Orange County Marathon through their campus running club.
“We have kindergarteners now who can run almost a mile without stopping,” Smith said, adding that, nearly 400 students participate in the club’s running sessions held during lunchtime on Wednesdays.
“I think it’s healthy for everybody because you get a lot of exercise and you never get tired of it,” student Charlie Lopez said. “It’s really fun… the Spirit Run especially because it’s in the morning and you feel energized,” he added.
The Newport-Mesa Spirit Run benefits schools in the district. For more information, visit Newport-Mesa Spirit Run online.
