Santa Monica's Ferris Wheel To Go Dark For Earth Hour

SANTA MONICA (CBS) — The world's most famous solar-powered Ferris wheel will go dark for an hour Saturday night in observance of Earth Hour 2011.

The energy-saving LED lights will be turned off from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. as part of the worldwide publicity campaign organized by the World Wildlife Fund for action against global warming and climate change.

The wheel, which uses solar power during daylight hours, has 160,000 LED lights on it.

Park spokesman Cameron Andrews says the safety lights on the wheel's rim will be the only ones left on during the observance.
