SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Dayne Crist says when he finally got back on the football field he was as happy as a little kid. The Notre Dame quarterback is coming off a second knee surgery in as many years and both injuries ended his season early.
Now, he’s back after another arduous rehab. A year ago, he emerged as the No. 1 quarterback as expected during spring drills. This time around, it’s a little different.
In addition to shaking off the rust, Crist is trying to win the starter’s job. His main competition is Tommy Rees, who started and won the team’s final four games of the season, including a Sun Bowl victory over Miami.
