Storm Causes Power Outages Across Southland

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — High winds and rain knocked out power to more than 46,000 Southland homes and businesses Sunday, according to utility officials.

The storm-related outages affected about 10,000 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers Sunday afternoon, DWP representative MaryAnne Pierson said.

Southern California Edison reported that 36,448 customers without power, according to Vanessa McGrady of SCE.

Most of the DWP outages were wind and rain related, including downed wires and tree branches getting tangled in wires, Pierson said.

"More of the outages are in the valley areas than in the central areas," she said. "We have extra crews, about 38 crews, out repairing things due to the weather."

Pierson said there were outages in West Los Angeles, the Hollywood Hills, Sherman Oaks, Century City, Chatsworth, West Hills and Sylmar.

In SCE's service area, the hardest hit included Garden Grove with 4,308 customers out, Palmdale with 3,421 customers out, Whittier with 1,510 customers out, Hawthorne with 777 customers out, and Lynwood with 263 customers out, McGrady said.
