LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A young man was killed Friday when an SUV hit him while he was walking on the Harbor (110) Freeway after his vehicle was involved in an accident and became disabled, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The fatal injury occurred about 1:40 a.m. on the northbound 110 Freeway, the CHP reported. Bernabe Basurto, 19, died at the scene, the coroner’s office said.
According to the preliminary investigation, Basurto’s vehicle had been involved in a crash with another vehicle, and he got out, the CHP reported.
“He was walking in the number 2 lane for unknown reasons,” the CHP reported. “A separate vehicle was traveling in the number 3 lane approaching the prior traffic collision. The driver changed lanes to the number 2 lane to avoid hitting the vehicles stopped in the number three lane, and subsequently struck the pedestrian.”
The 60-year-old man driving the 2008 Mazda Tribute that hit Basurto was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, the CHP reported.
