Costa Mesa Worker About To Be Laid Off Jumps To His Death

COSTA MESA (CBS/AP) — Police say a Costa Mesa maintenance worker jumped to his death from the roof of City Hall after he was called in to get his layoff notice.

Costa Mesa police Lt. Bryan Glass says the man jumped at about 3:20 p.m. Thursday.

"This is a tragic event for the city as well as for all city employees," Glass said. "Everyone here is a close family and we're all familiar with each other."

Police say the man had worked for the city for four and a-half years. He had been at home with a broken ankle and was not supposed to work today, but he was called in about 2:30 p.m. to receive his layoff notice.

The City Council voted earlier this month to outsource more than 18 city services and cut more than 200 jobs in a drastic move to plug a $15 million dollar budget hole.
