Adult Industry Fighting '.XXX' Internet Domain Change

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Members of the adult entertainment industry are in San Francisco to oppose a plan to create a separate Internet address for porn websites.

After a decade-long debate, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, decided in December to proceed with the ".xxx" domain name suffix to stand alongside ".com" and ".org".

ICANN is taking public commentary on the issue at its conference Thursday, and adult industry representatives say they will speak out against the plan.

ICM Registry LLC, which wants to sell the domain names, says the ".xxx" suffix will help customers find adult sites.

But the industry argues it will cost website operators millions in unnecessary fees and make porn sites easier to block by governments.

About two dozen people protested outside ICANN's meeting, chanting "We like porn. No to xxx."
