Parents To Join LAUSD Debate Over Charter Schools

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — To charter or not to charter: that's one of the options the Los Angeles Unified school board will consider on Monday as they decide the fate of 13 campuses.

The school board is expected to make decisions on operators of several charter campuses under the Public School Choice program, according to the LAUSD.

KNX 1070's Jon Baird reports dozens of people camped out in anticipation of the special session to approve operators for ten new and three existing schools.

There's growing support for the charter school option, which has a lot more flexibility and autonomy than a traditional district school.

But others who camped out overnight prefer public school plans, saying parents have more input.

The board meeting will begin at 9 a.m. at district headquarters, 333 S. Beaudry Ave., but the "public school choice" discussion was scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. during a special session.
