Celebs Ask Obama To Come Out For Same-Sex Marriage

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An advocacy group says Anne Hathaway, Martin Sheen and Jane Lynch are among a group of actors, athletes and business leaders urging President Barack Obama to support marriage rights for same-sex couples.

The New York-based group Freedom to Marry said Monday that R&B singer Mya, NFL linebacker Scott Fujita and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey also signed an open letter calling on the president to back gay marriage.

Obama has said he supports civil unions as an alternative to marriage for gays and lesbians, and his views on the subject are evolving. His administration announced this month that it would no longer defend the federal law barring government recognition of same-sex unions.

Freedom to Marry says several couples plan to deliver the letter to the White House in the spring.

These celebrities need to MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS. Not everyone wants to live like the celebrities. Who CARES what THEY think? I think they need to be quiet because they DO NOT REPRESENT me.

    • bob

who cares what you think? Just another christian hater, probably.

  • Karen

Californian voters have voted twice and SAID NO. Our former governor and attorney general believed THEY WERE ABOVE US because they did not support our vote. The CA Supreme Court affirmed our vote. When will these people STFU? Please STFU.

    • Caitlin

Actually the Supreme Court did not affirm your vote. Not sure why you would think that.

      • Karen

Actually, the CALIFORNIA Supreme Court did EXACTLY that. That court said WE CALIFONRNIANS LEGALLY DEFINED MARRIAGE AS BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN IN OUR STATE CONSTITUTION. Then the gay couples brought it to the FEDERAL COURT and mark my words, the Ninth Circuit will realize that the FEDS have zero business getting involved per the US Supreme Court decision in Maynard v Hill.

    • Xiao He

      You STFU first

  • William

The right to marry should never be put to a popular vote. The rights of minorities are protected by the US Constitution, and those who would deny their fellow citizens the same rights they enjoy without thinking are deeply un-American.

    • Karen

You are mistaken that the rights of minorities are protected by the US Constitution. WE ALL HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS and it’s too bad that some people want MORE rights than others.

You can’t always get what you want.

      • Karen

Don’t have a hernia Scott. YOU DO have the same rights as I do. You’re a human being aren’t you? We humans have the right to vote, get a job, get married, etc. What ARE YOU talking about that you don’t have these rights? We just do not agree that two men or two women get married. If you want a civil union, GO FOR IT, but you CAN NOT and WILL NOT change the definition of marriage because gay people want it that way. NO WAY.

      • Scott Robinson

where the hell are you getting your info from karen? the GLBTQ commuinty does NOT have the same rights as you. we had to fight to be able to serve our country openly. did straight women and men get discharged for being straight? do straight women and men get beaten and sometimes murdered for being straight? do the striaght youth get bullied for being straight? are straights banned from getting married in most states? and the answer to all those questions is NO.

plus if you look at history Karen WOMEN & BLACKS had to fight for their equal rights. so until you get correct info about stuff THINK BEFORE YOU POST

    • Saber 1

Are you a pole smoker? Man and woman, I voted on this act and YES ON PROP 8. Smoke that Willy.

  • Frank

Those celebrities need to mind their own business just as much as you do. It’s about equal rights and you and the rest of California should not be able to vote on whether of not I get to marry. I am a gay man, I have two children from a marriage, cause at one point I was giving into society to try to be normal. But I realized I’m am normal and if anyone doesn’t like me then that’s their loss. I’m a great person, great parent and I feel everyone deserves to be happy. I can’t decide your happiness so don’t try to decide mine. Obama, I voted for you because I wanted change. We want change and it’s your responsibility to ensure equal rights for all. And Karen, we will STFU when we have equal rights and are afforded the the same rights as you.

    • Karen

You ALREADY have the same rights as me. You want EXTRA rights. Eventually, you will STFU because Maryland just told you guys to get lost. They did not even bring the issue to the floor for a vote.

      • Karen

Clarification – Millions of people want EXTRA rights. As human beings, YOU ALL HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS OTHER HUMAN BEINGS.

      • Karen STFU

STFU b*tch. You have no right to talk, you have a p*ss.

      • Karen

Just because you are so rude, I will again post and let you know that the CA Supreme Court has already said that Californians’ vote to change the CA Constitution IS VALID. Why in the world a retiring gay judge in San Francisco would rule against a U.S. Supreme Court decision (Maynard v Hill) is clearly apparent. The federal government has zero business getting involved in marriage licenses (see, Maynard v Hill). Whine all you want. It’s not going to change but a couple of ivory tower laywers will be super rich trying but FAILING.

      • Frank

Almost all the rights. All the rights would mean I would be able to marry just as you can. There is too much hate in this world and I’m not gonna engage in a conversation filled with hatred. I simply believe we all deserve the same rights. Freedom to speak, to bear arms, the right to vote and the right to marry. We have no special rights. We are simply fighting for the same rights. I respect you, I don’t flaunt my sexuality, I simply expect the same. Being able to marry just as you do is not an EXTRA right. I will be able to marry just as you do and I look forward to it. Have a great life, just as I plan to.

      • Christopher Lee Rendon

Karen, if we had the same rights as you do, there wouldn’t be millions of people fighting for gay rights. Don’t be ignorant sweetie.

      • Scott Robinson

we have the same rights? since when. and where do you get we want “extra” rights? last time i checked we want EQUAL rights.

    • Mel

You’re right, you’re not normal. That’s exactly why you shouldn’t be allowed to take my right to be normal away from me.

Traditional “normal” marriage should stay just that. We’ll be happy to create a “gay” marriage certificate just for you and your partner. Just stop trying to force your abnormal behavior on the rest of us.

      • Christopher Lee Rendon

No one is trying to force our “abnormal behavior” on the rest of “you” people. We are just trying to live our lives. How is allowing gay people get married, “forcing” a behavior on you? Your comment is rather ignorant.

What is not normal, is people thinking the way you think. Lets not forget, narrow minded people, like yourself, thought witches existed, or thought that the world was actually flat. NARROW minded people. Think about that for a second, before you make comments like you just did.

  • Frank

No from us. It’s already being done by all the straight people. From priest at church, to fathers and so forth. You need to keeping an eye on your own, not the gays. The real problem is people with attitudes like yours!

  • Frank

And deport the stupid people like you back to England.

  • Emily

I agree that the gay community deserves the same right as the rest of the world. Why is it such a big deal if two men want to be married or two women want to be married?. It’s not Who you love, it’s HOW you love!!… I can’t believe how much grief is being thrown at the gay community because I don’t remember hearing about this much grief when Mentally Challenged people wanted to marry or when people in Interracial Relationships wanted to be married. They got that right and I think it is now time for the gay community to have that right. They are not demanding any Special or Extra rights they just want the same rights as the rest of the world. And they are not forcing their lifestyle on anyone or saying that it should be condoned.

    • Scott Robinson

i totally agree with you Emily :)

  • Christopher Lee Rendon

Actually majority of the people that practice incest and rape others are straight men. So, you shouldn’t worry about something that is ALREADY happening.

  • Scott Robinson

the GLBTQ community deserves the same rights as every other american. we need to get back to ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL. lady gaga hit the nail on the head when she spoke the words “you say that this country is free and you say that this country is equal but it’s not equal if it’s sometimes”

    • Karen

Lady Gaga? You bring up a baby food and ice cream to make your point? Oh PUH-LEEZ. I could care less what this fool has to say. We voted twice and the vote was the same.

But hey, in California, it seems the liberals want to keep voting until they get their way – think Jerry Brown and his tax vote he keeps trying to shove down our throat AFTER we already voted TWICE.

      Notice a pattern?

  • Lenny

I say review it in 85 years.

  • Scott Robinson

you’re really living under a rock right? gays are in EVERY country

  • Scott Robinson

is your head that far up your @ss that you need to ask a question that most states already have the answer to. most incest & polygamy is done my straight men. most rapes are done by straight men. most kids are molested by priests.

  • Jay Hardee

They need to keep quiet because they don’t represent you? I don’t think they’re speaking on your behalf but expressing their own opinion. I think the better question is who cares what you think? Bigot.

  • Saber 1

Look, CA. hjas voted on this damn thing a few times. Nobody wants to see a pole smoker or carpet munchers get married. The bible says Adan and Eve, not Adam and Steve. How do you explain that to ypur kids when they see flammers kissing in publc.

  • Josh

Poor Karen, You don’t seem to understand. I can not go out and get married. I don’t have the same tax structure as a heterosexual. I could continue this list for quite a while. How are you saying that I have the same rights as a person that is a heterosexual? Telling people to STFU, now that is just immature. Often when people don’t have any backing to their argument the default to using such language. If you wish to have a discussion please have some intelligence and respect. Have a great day everyone!

    • Karen

Josh – if you married a female, YOU COULD GET MARRIED.

      What is your problem?

Saber – I never heard the term pole smoker before. Priceless. I smoke poles too so there we have it – EVERYONE has the same rights.

  • Mandi

Saber 1 too you. Yes the bible does state there was an ADAM and EVE, yet the bible also states that once a man marries that he shall not lay with another woman hince the word ADULTRY. Before you start posting biblical posts…etc everyone needs to look into there own closets. I’m not saying evryone is an adultrist yet why cant we come together as a country and support our fellow citizens and their wishes. It’s with simple minded ignorant comments like pole smokers, carpet munchers…etc that people make assumptions that all gays and lesibians are flamboyant. Grow up with your comments before posting
