Daylight Saving Time Comes Back Sunday

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Better stock up on sleep – its time to spring forward this weekend.

Daylight saving time kicks in Sunday, so clocks should be pushed one hour forward at 2 a.m. The change allows for more daylight in the afternoons.

The practice was adopted in the United States in 1918, partly as a way to cut down on energy use in the evenings. Hawaii and Arizona, except for the Navajo Nation, does not observe daylight saving time.

Not everyone loves the extra afternoon daylight. Some medical experts say the one-hour loss of sleep is too precious, considering how little sleep Americans get anyway. Many people simply hate the practice of changing their clocks twice a year – once to spring forward, and a second time to fall back, usually in November.

Safety officials, however, take advantage of daylight saving time as convenient time to remind people to change the batteries in their smoke detectors.
