Pilot In Homebuilt Plane Dies In Mojave Desert Crash
LUDLOW (AP) — A pilot heading from California to Georgia in a homebuilt plane has crashed and died in San Bernardino County.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the wreckage of the single-engine aircraft was found Wednesday morning in the Mojave Desert. The county coroner's office says the wreckage was discovered in the rural area of Ludlow.
The pilot was the only person aboard. His name wasn't released.
An FAA website indicates the aircraft was registered to Brent Bartells of Springville in Tulare County.
Gregor says the plane left Porterville on Monday and the pilot's wife reported him missing when he failed to contact her during the flight.
Gregor says the FAA contacted the county Sheriff's Department, which began a search.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
