Hostage Situation, Standoff In Industry Ends In Surrender

INDUSTRY (CBS) — An armed man who held his family hostage in the Industry area surrendered to a sheriff's special weapons team Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The standoff began about 10:40 p.m. Monday and ended at about 3 this morning in the 700 block of Vineland Avenue in Bassett, an unincorporated area near Industry, Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Rob Blunt of the Walnut Station said.

George Calderon, 30, was booked on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, possession of an unregistered firearm, and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, the sheriff's department reported. He allegedly fired a shotgun toward deputies when they arrived, a sheriff's deputy said.

The suspect apparently lives in a second house on the property, across the street from Torch Middle School, officials said.

Sheriff's deputies evacuated two children and a man, believed to be the suspect's father, from the home.
