OC Retirement Community To Approve Anti-Hoarding Policy

LAGUNA WOODS (AP) — Residents of a gated retirement community in Orange County may be subject to inspections if they're suspected of hoarding.

The Orange County Register reports the board of Laguna Woods Village is expected to give final approval to the new policy on Tuesday.

Under the policy, residents of the 6,323-unit community can report those they suspect of having excessive clutter in their homes. Once a complaint is filed, an inspection is ordered.

Residents who refuse inspections will be called before the board for a disciplinary hearing.

If the board determines hoarding is going on, the resident would have 15 days to remove the clutter or ultimately face eviction.

Margaret Riley, chairwoman of the county's task force on hoarding, says the policy aims to address a potential safety hazard or fire code violation.
