Brown: We Don't Have GOP Votes To Pass Budget Plan

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown says he has been unable to secure enough Republican votes to pass his plan for addressing California's $26.6 billion budget deficit.

He has been meeting with GOP lawmakers individually and in groups for weeks.

On Monday, the Democratic governor addressed the board of governors for the California Community College.

He told reporters afterward that he might not win the two Republican votes he needs in each legislative house by his Thursday deadline. Brown needs their support to ask voters to extend temporary sales, income and vehicle tax hikes for another five years.

He will balance that revenue with $12 billion in spending cuts.

Brown says Republicans want to add "collateral issues," such as school and pension reform to the budget talks, but says there isn't enough time.
