Vigil Honors Bell City Council Candidate Miguel Sanchez

BELL (CBS/AP) — A candlelight vigil was held Sunday evening in honor of Bell City Council candidate Miguel Alejandro Sanchez, who died suddenly Friday.

The 34-year-old was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center Thursday and died 12 hours after being admitted of an unknown ailment.

Sanchez was running for former Councilman Luis Artiga's seat in Tuesday's special recall election. Artiga resigned last year amid allegations that he and other city officials misappropriated public funds.

Cristina Garcia, a spokesperson for the Bell Association to Stop the Abuse (BASTA), told KNX 1070's Chris Sedens that Sanchez's name remains on the ballot. If he is elected, the city will run another special election to fill that seat.

Sanchez was among the many angry residents who protested outside Bell City Hall last summer, demanding the resignations of city officials who were receiving outsize salaries.

The Times says Sanchez was a part-time teacher's aide for the Los Angeles Unified School District and also worked part-time for the parks and recreation department in Bell.

He is survived by his parents and two brothers.
