LA County Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure Raises Over $1.5M

LOS ANGELES (CBS2) — Nearly 10,000 Angelenos Sunday participated in the Los Angeles County Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure, raising over $1.5 million.

The annual 5K run/walk at Dodger Stadium began at 9 a.m. and featured live entertainment, games and prizes.

The CBS2/KCAL9 news team -- including Pat Harvey, Paul Magers, Jim Hill, Jackie Johnson, Evelyn Taft, Rick Garcia, Sharon Tay, Sylvia Lopez, Lisa Sigell, Suraya Fadel, and Stephanie Abrams -- were among those that joined the thousands of others in honoring breast cancer survivors and remembering those who have passed away.

"I lost my first cousin to breast cancer two years ago. She was 48 years old. Fifteen years ago, I could say I didn't know anyone who had succumbed to this disease but now I do. And its been more than that, but that's the person that's been the closest to me and my family," CBS2 Anchor Pat Harvey said.

"All of us here at least have something in common – we want to help defeat this disease," Harvey added.

CBS2 Meteorologist Jackie Johnson said Komen has invested nearly $2 billion dollars to fulfill its promise – becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

Breast cancer leads Los Angeles County as the most diagnosed cancer. Statistics show that over 100 cases are diagnosed weekly and there are 22 breast cancer deaths per week.

Seventy-five percent of the proceeds will stay here in L.A. County to fund programs for medically underserved women.
