City Council Backs Public Sector In Wisconsin Labor Fight

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Local lawmakers say Los Angeles has a vested interest in the collective bargaining dispute between the governor and public sector employee unions in Wisconsin.

KNX 1070's Bill Cooper reports at least one council member has voiced his support for the "basic democratic right" of workers to negotiate for their economic future.

Council president Eric Garcetti says he hopes the council's resolution will foster some type of legislative or administrative action to uphold worker's collective bargaining rights in Wisconsin, where they are currently threatened in pending legislation.

"We've had success when we sit down with our union partners, and say 'This is the situation, this is a shared burden'," Garcetti said. "We've been able to get cuts, we've been able to get increased pension contributions, we've been able to get increased health care contributions."
