El Camino College Settles Sexual Harassment Suit For $2.5M

TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) — A former secretary who claimed she was sexually harassed by a former dean at a Southern California college will receive $2.5 million.

The Daily Breeze of Torrance says El Camino College settled a lawsuit with Nyesha Artiaga last month. The community college will pay about a third of the settlement and its insurance company will pay most of the rest. The former dean James Schwartz, will pay $25,000.

Under last month’s settlement Artiaga agreed to quit her job and never to apply for employment with the college again.

In court documents, Artiaga claimed that between 2007 and 2009, Schwartz groped her and threatened to fire her if she refused to have sex with him.

Schwartz said the two had a consensual relationship.

What a joke…never apply for a job at the college again…..thats showing her..

  • Mike

Shouldn’t it be the Dean who can not apply again at any college?

Everything was hunky dorey for years with the lady getting benefits from the arrangement until she had some kind of an issue and cried foul. Women are scandalous :(

    • TruthHurts

I know this woman personally and she is far from scandalous. If this were your sister, wife or mother you wouldn’t be so quick to judge!

  • NO WAY

No, the VP, Arce, who allowed the many instances on campus is scandalous. The good old boys drank together and had a good time. El Camino has had many instances since this VP arrived.

$2.5M is HUSH MONEY. Jim Schwartz is known for sexually harassing women AND students on campus. This girl was just brave enough to come forward and stand up for herself against those who CLAIM they didn’t know. I hope the others do too.

If you don’t work there, you don’t know the details. The big question is, will the Board have the guts to fire some people over this? The people who run ECC have been asleep and in denial for years, its like the Twilight Zone.

They would have to start firing people in Human Resources as well as the Department of Student Affairs that is in charge of preventing situations like this, especially long going situations. They need to clean house at that place. Our tax dollars are not at work there.

start at the top and FIRE THE PRESIDENT. hey-hey ho-ho shallow Fallo’s got to go. not only did she personally reach out to the president for help and complain about what was going on in Fine Arts but so did several others on her behalf (the union, tenured faculty and staff). EXPLAIN THAT BILL BEVERLY and while you’re at it don’t forget to mention that she also publically came directly to you and the board of trustees with her complaints as well. IN RETURN a witch hunt ensued and she was retaliated against and further harassed in an effort to shut her up and get rid of her. WAKE UP PEOPLE! everyone here knows how foul our administration is. let her be an example of what happens when you stand your ground against the old mighty corrupted system. I’M PROUD OF HER…WAY TO GO!

The president’s decision to hire Arce, even though he knew he was run out of his last job, has now cost the college almost a million dollars-other suits are coming. Arce’s actions were illegal and everyone involved with tampering with that secretary’s personnel records should be fired. The Baord needs to wake up and do its job. It is no excuse to say that they were all just following orders.

VP Arce should be fired immediately. He knew what was going on. He and Schwartz were drinking buddies. The likely had some laughs about it all. Somehow the school thinks that “consenual” is an excuse. Any lawyer could tell them if a supervisor threatens an employee with a bad evaluation if they don’t have sex with him, it is NOT CONSENUAL. Wake up. Beverly sounds like an idiot!!

Doesn’t the president make over 300,000 at that place?? They might be asleep at the wheel but they are not underpaid.

El Camino is an institutional structure that is predisposed to protect the accused instead of the victim and makes no effort at investigating allegations made.

This type of thing has been going on for DECADES. This good old boyz club has been untouchable. They have been doing whatever they want and it gets swept under the rug. If someone complains, a smear campaign ensues against the victim and they are destroyed. Isn’t it amazing how many top management positions Dr. Schwartz has had? He knows where all the bodies are buried. They do not practice what they preach there. they are required to train employees about harassment but you can see how effective that has been. I am glad to see at least one instance where the victim prevails. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Kudos to the Daily Breeze for reporting this on the front page.

The school administration knew and did nothing. A complaint was filed and they ignored it. This is not the 1st time Schwartz has done this. Someone finally stood up, spoke out and in return almost got fired for doing sip.. The VP has the same issues and has for years. The settlement is so large because the school was so negligent. It is a disgrace they don’t fire the VP in charge, a drinking buddy of the dean involved and everyone who was involved in the cover up.

The systematic methods of brainwashing, indoctrination and physical control that were used against this woman are deplorable.
