Ruptured Water Main Floods Van Nuys Underground Garage

VAN NUYS (CBS) — A 12-inch cast-iron water main broke Sunday in Van Nuys, flooding the underground garage of an apartment building, a fire official said.

The break in the 14700 block of Vanowen Street occurred about 6:15 a.m., Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The street between Cedros Avenue and Van Nuys Boulevard will be closed indefinitely while crews work to repair the water main, Terry Schneider of the Department of Water and Power said.

It was unclear how many customers were without water service, Schneider said.

Firefighters were pumping water out of an underground parking garage at an apartment building at 14762 Vanowen St.

On Saturday, a 6-inch water main broke under Central Avenue near 118th Street, leaving 10-15 customers without service, according to the DWP.
